When Newton Minnow made his now-famous remark about commercial television programming, it resonated well with thinking people. "Television is," he said, "a vast wasteland." From that day down to this, the situation has, if anything, deteriorated. Viewing primetime television on one of the commercial networks, any given evening of the week, reminds us that the problem isn't television programming. The problem is the values (or the lack of values) inherent in what comes through.
