When nine coal miners were trapped in Quecreek mine in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, for some 72 hours beginning July 24, 2002, many people prayed. Accounts of the disaster revealed that the nine miners prayed even as they feared their plight was hopeless. We are told that the families of the miners were called together to the Sipesville firehouse, where they prayed under the leadership and with the encouragement of local pastors. And news reports included the observation that millions across the country were praying for the miners, as often happens when tragedy is reported on the news. Christian people quickly acknowledged that when rescuers with the super drill finally were able to break into the chamber where the miners were trapped and the miners were all finally freed, it was a dramatic answer to their many prayers.
When we find ourselves in difficult situations, it is of tremendous comfort to know that others are praying for us. In this text we are told that Jesus, the perfect Son of God who has completely accomplished our salvation, also prays always for us in our need.
