When Thomas Edison was twelve...
Illustration
When Thomas Edison was twelve, he took a job on the Grand Trunk Railway as a "news butcher," selling newspapers, candy, sandwiches, and peanuts to the passengers. One day at Fraser Station, Michigan, as he struggled to catch up with a moving train, a well-meaning conductor caught hold of his ears to pull him up to the platform. Edison felt something snap inside his head. It was the beginning of his deafness that grew progressively worse through the years until he could barely hear even a shout.
