When Thomas wasn't with the other disciples on the occasion of Jesus' first resurrection appearance, Jesus doesn't go out looking for him. That might have frightened him more. He may already have been afraid, which would explain his absence. Jesus knew Thomas would need some convincing, but he also knew he would not be convinced until he decided to "link up with the old gang again. Believing comes in relationship. That is the significance of "touch" in this story. Seeing can be done from afar, touch is "up close and personal." Touch may not even mean actual physical contact.
