When you go to boil water, do you fill the pot with hot water or cold? Cold water actually will come to a boil faster than water that is already warm. It is that water that is at a temperature farther away from the boiling point that in fact will come to a boil first.

And that is how it is with us. As we come to see just how far away from God we truly are, the better able God is to lift us up to that level where we belong. That is the kind of self-critical honesty that John the Baptist encouraged.
