When young Alexander, who later conquered the known world and secured the title "The Great," was a young boy, his father purchased a rambunctious stallion. Nobody could ride the animal, which bucked and reared when anyone tried to mount him. The young prince, having noticed the animal seemed to be spooked by his own shadow, steered the beast around so that his eyes were into the sun (where his shadow disappeared). He then mounted and rode the animal without difficulty, but to the amazement of all, not the least of his father, Philip of Macedon.
