Whether the adversary is external or from within, Jesus' words hold true: "By standing firm you will gain life."
In a literal sense, Elva Yardley no longer stands firm. The schoolteacher was forced into early retirement by the multiple sclerosis which has nearly run its course in her body. She no longer stands. She no longer moves any limb or turns even her head which now rests on an immobile neck.
