While attending Iowa Boys' State, a high school junior heard a stirring speech on freedom, commitment, and the high cost of freedom. The Commander of the VFW shared with the youth a story of how a rear guard battalion of Marines was literally wiped out as their fellow Marines escaped from a South Pacific island. Later, those who had been saved by the heroic act of self-
sacrifice erected a monument in their honor. The inscription says it all: "For Your Tomorrow We Gave Our Last Today."
