"Wrong-way Corrigan" got his nickname by acting on the maxim, "It's easier to get forgiveness than permission." In 1929 the small-craft pilot applied to the U.S. Bureau of Air Commerce for permission to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in his monoplane, Lizzy. The Bureau was convinced he was navigating a deathtrap. It had no safety devices, lacked a radio, and the extra fuel tanks the pilot had added for long flights completely obscured forward vision. He had to look out the side window to see where he was going.
