X marks the...
Illustration
"X marks the spot." This saying may have come from old treasure maps --a crudely marked X indicated where one might dig to try to find the buried treasure. Today this X refers to any target -- the hairline cross on a gun scope indicating where one should shoot, or an X drawn on the ground where a water witch says one should drill to bring in a good water well.
On Ash Wednesday, literally or verbally, a cross will be drawn on the forehead of every willing worshiper. It is the X of the cross of Jesus Christ. X marks the spot. For what?
