Dear Fellow Preacher,
The image of the coffin of John Paul II in the front of the great throng of mourners at St. Peter's Basilica is indelible. It was appropriate that his shepherd's crosier was prominently placed and that Ratzinger's homily was based on the Johannine text, "Feed my sheep." This remarkable, scholarly, athletic, and charismatic leader had a profound effect on people and on history, even though many of his own flock disagreed with some of his emphases, especially regarding Latin America and family planning.
