As this week’s lectionary gospel text begins, we are told that John the Baptist “appeared in the wilderness” and that “people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him.” In this installment of The Immediate Word, team member Dean Feldmeyer points out that many of us in North America have an image of the wilderness rooted more in Ansel Adams photographs of lush forestland than in the reality of the Middle Eastern desert.
