The prophet Jeremiah complained about those who "treated the wound of my people carelessly, saying, 'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace" (Jeremiah 6:14). That sounds eerily similar to the bewildered reaction voiced by merchants of a Baghdad market called Shorja following a visit by an American congressional delegation led by Senator John McCain. When McCain declared that Shorja was a safe, bustling place full of hopeful and warmly welcoming Iraqis -- "like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime" according to one of his colleagues -- the merchants were incredulous.
