Advent 1

A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Through the ages men have wondered,
talked about the end of time.
Some have said they had the answers
with a formula divine.
But we cannot know the answers
nor perceive the how or when.
We can hardly know the questions;
it’s so far beyond our ken.
What will close the human era?
How will end our little tale?
Will it come in fire and thunder?
Will the mushroom cloud prevail?
Will it be a bolt from heaven
that ignites the holocaust?
Or will earthly fools demolish
all the good that will be lost?
Will the works of man be covered
by the jungles and the dust,
then to be amalgamated
into earth’s absorbing crust?
Will it be Creation’s ending
when the day of man is done?
Or will man be soon forgotten
as the rest of life goes on?
There’s a thought intrigues me more
than when the end of time will be.
What concerns me more than that is,
'When will be the end of me?'
That I do not know the timing
hardly bothers me a bit.
I’ll just leave it in the hands
of Him who started all of it.
