A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Ann’s daughter, Mary,
had a great vision:
a messenger angel,
bearing a promise.
She wondered just what it could mean.
Then, pregnancy started,
to visit a cousin,
beginning her task to believe,
said she with emotion,
'My soul must proclaim
the greatness of God.
My spirit rejoices in glory.
He has visited me with His almighty favor
and people will all call me blest.'
Lord, what was the blessing you gave her?
A journey to Bethlehem town,
heavy with child,
no room at the inn,
a cowpen her lying-in room,
her cradle, a manger,
while overhead, angels
gave praise for the night.
And so Mary pondered.
She pondered and wondered.
She pondered all this in her heart.
And this was the blessing,
the God-given blessing
that Mary, that night did receive:
The hands and the feet and the side of her baby
were scarless and lovely to see.
Her blessing that night was not knowing the future
Not knowing was blessing enough.
