Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
If we love the Lord with all our hearts, minds, and strength,
we are going to have to stretch our hearts, open our minds,
and strengthen our souls ... God cannot lodge in a narrow mind;
God cannot lodge in a small heart. To accommodate God they must be palatial.
-- William Sloan Coffin, Credo
Call To Worship
Leader: It's a good day to praise God! It's a good time to remember how God has been with us.
People: It's the right time to be grateful for the women and men who have blessed us through the years -- whose faith has been an example for us.
Leader: We thank God for the Holy Spirit in us and revealed in others.
People: How powerful are the blessings God gives us!
Leader: The power working in us is the same power that raised Jesus to life.
People: Hallelujah!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Great God -- we know that the church is the Body of Christ. We are glad to be part of that Body! We are glad to be in a long line of faithful people who have sought to honor you and make something of your reign apparent on this earth. With hearts and minds, we articulate our gratitude for this place and for all the people who have offered us bits of wisdom on our journey to you. For all the saints who have led us on our way, thank you. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Jesus taught his disciples to do for others what they wanted done for themselves. We call this saying the "golden rule." Notice in your own mind and psyche where you have difficulty living by these words. Pray with me the printed prayer and then make your own prayer to God.
Community Confession (Unison)
God of Time and Eternity -- we hear Jesus say that kindness begins with us, that respect begins with us, that hospitality begins with us.
Some days we easily live by the words of Jesus. Sometimes, we fall sadly short of that goal.
Reveal to us the times and places we can more graciously embody the wisdom of Jesus.
Help us notice multiple options for sharing the love we have received. Amen.
Sermon Idea
Lead the people on a guided meditation to times and people who have listened non-judgmentally, who affirmed them at various stages of development, and who offered bits of wisdom for the soul as well as the body. Invite them to light a candle for each person who was present for them.
(Light the Christ candle as the source of fire, making sure there is safe and easy access to the candles and to the "eternal flame." A wick from the acolyte's lighter works well and dips easily into votive holders.)
When everyone has returned to her/his seat, invite one sentence of thanks for the saints who blessed them along the way.
(If the gathering is small, this may take only a few moments; if there is a large crowd, the candlelighting and statement of thanks may take a long time. Be sensitive to what is happening and don't let the time become a negative drain. You might plant a person or two who are willing to initiate the sharing.)
Some congregations appreciate gentle music in the background; others enjoy the silence.
Conclude the meditation time with the hymn (perhaps only v. 1), "For All The Saints."
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader or Unison)
Eternal God -- we remember so many people who have been our saints through the years.
Thank you for their liveliness, for their patience, and for all their gifts of Spirit.
May our memories of them continue to encourage us and to honor them.
Empower us to mentor and bless those around us so we, too, may be saints for this time and place. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
It's a good day (or night) to praise God!
A good day (or night) to be aware of our blessings!
A good day to recall how others have guided you and me toward the Mystery of God.
A good day to bless others on their way toward Holy Living.
The peace of God that is beyond human quietness sustain you all through this day and night.
Amen.
