Call To Worship
Revelation 21:1-6 (The Message)
Leader:
I saw Heaven and earth new-created.
People:
Gone the first Heaven, gone the first earth, gone the sea.
Leader:
I saw Holy Jerusalem, new-created, descending resplendent out of heaven,
People:
As ready for God as a bride for her husband.
Leader:
I heard a voice thunder from the throne: Look! Look! God has moved into the neighborhood,
People:
Making his home with men and women!
Leader:
They're his people,
People:
He's their God.
Leader:
He'll wipe away every tear from their eyes.
People:
Death is gone for good --
Leader:
Tears gone, crying gone, pain gone -- all the first order of things gone.
People:
The enthroned continued,
Leader:
Look! I'm making everything new.
People:
It's true.
Leader:
It's completed.
People:
Creator God, who makes all things new,
Leader:
He is the Alpha and Omega, A to Z, the beginning and the end,
People:
We worship you.
From Psalm 24:7-10.
Leader:
Lift up your heads,
People:
Be lifted up,
Leader:
That the king of glory may come in.
People:
Who is this king of glory?
Leader:
The Lord strong and mighty.
People:
The Lord Almighty,
Leader:
He is the king of glory.
People:
We lift up our heads and voices
Leader:
To the king of glory. Let us praise him.
Prayer Of Confession
John 11 passage.
Leader:
Her beloved brother was dead.
People:
Mary fell at Jesus' feet, weeping,
Leader:
Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
People:
When he saw the heartache and grief of Mary and her friends,
Leader:
Jesus wept.
People:
Death is not what God intended for his beloved children;
Leader:
Yet death is the sentence for our sin.
People:
We, too, are dead in our sin.
Leader:
We fall at your feet, Lord Jesus, broken and in tears.
People:
Forgive us for our sin,
Leader:
And for the heartache and grief you and your people suffer because of it.
People:
Deliver us from this grave of death.
Assurance Of Pardon
This Assurance goes with the Confession immediately above.
Leader:
Jesus shouted, "Lazarus, come out!"
People:
And the dead man came forth from the grave.
Leader:
Jesus said, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."
People:
Jesus spoke into the darkness and swallowed up death.
Leader:
Come out of the grave, people of God. You are freed from the grip of death.
People:
Jesus is our Savior, who weeps with us and for us.
Leader:
He does not abandon us to the grave.
People:
He calls us out and gives us eternal life.
Leader:
In Jesus Christ, death is no more.
People:
Praise be to God and to his Son, Jesus Christ!
Leader:
Amen.
Isaiah 25:8
Leader:
Hear the word of the Lord from Isaiah:
People:
He will swallow up death forever.
Leader:
The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces;
People:
He will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth,
Leader:
The Lord has spoken.
People:
Amen.
Prayer Of Dedication
The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it; the world, and all who live in it. All things come from you, and of your own have we given you. Receive back your own, both the gifts and the givers, for we belong to you. Amen.
Prayer For Illumination
Though you have set us free, we remain wrapped in remnants of our grave clothes, keeping us from seeing and hearing you clearly. Help us remove the distractions and constraints that block our vision and deafen our understanding. Give us clarity as you speak to us this day. Amen.
Pastoral Prayer
Compassionate Savior, who stands beside those in the midst of pain and suffering and grief, reach into their darkness and call forth life. We remember those who need the hope and assurance that tears and death are not the final word. Lord Jesus, you are the beginning and the end, the true word which is life. For those in desperate places, breathe into them your love and your life. In the power of the risen Lord, we pray. Amen.
Benediction
Go forth in newness of life.
