LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Series VII, Cycle A
First Lesson: Joel 2:12-13
Theme: It's Not Too Late
Call To Worship (Joel 2:12-13)
One: Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing.
All: Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.
Collect
The day of the Lord is no longer at hand. It is powerfully among us, in the healing Spirit that forgives our sins. Dust we are, and to dust we shall return. Accept us, Lord, as the people you called, and mold us into your witnesses, broken healers equipped to call other sinners home. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
The day of the Lord is at hand, and we assume that we will share in the glory. How much better if we were to see in God's promise of a new world a new chance for us to repent? Lord, we seize this opportunity. We are sinners. We confess to you from the depths of our heart the sorrow which comes from the sins we have committed. We accept with first somber gratitude and then surprised joy the forgiveness which flows from your throne. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"The Glory Of These Forty Days"
"Create In Me A Clean Heart"
"Joys Are Flowing Like A River"
Ash Wednesday
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10
Theme: The Clear Paradox
Call To Worship
Nothing and everything. Nothing from the world. Everything from God. We take nothing with us. We gain everything through the cross. Nothing and everything. Loss is gain. Welcome to the upside down Kingdom of Christ.
Collect
Lord, with bowed heads we humbly offer up to you our brokenness, so that in our weakness your undeniable strength will shine before the world, leading others to the Savior during this season of Lent. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
I accept the ashes, the emblem of my mortal limitations. Lord, be merciful unto me a sinner. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you under my roof. Only say the word and my soul will be healed. Jesus, remember me in your kingdom. Amen.
Hymns
"In The Cross Of Christ I Glory"
"We Walk By Faith"
"What Wondrous Love Is This"
Ash Wednesday
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
Theme: A Heartening Treasure
Call To Worship
Take time to still your hearts. All that was on your mind as you entered does not matter now. Come to this quiet place, come to your Heavenly Father who is waiting for you. Come.
Collect
Here in this place of calm and repose the world's true treasure lies. Let us gather as God's people to humbly ask - and accept - God's love and assurance. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Is it possible, Lord, that I am like one of those who worries about what others think? Can it be that I am one of those you warned about, who prefer the praise of other believers instead of earnestly seeking your forgiveness and redemption? This is a time of change, of turning around, of turning back. I turn back to you, just as I am. Lord, I come. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Now Is The Time To Worship"
"Precious Lord, Take My Hand"
"Just As I Am"
