Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: A Call To Repentance
Call To Worship
Leader: Be merciful to us, O God, because of your constant love.
People: Because of your great mercy, wipe away our sins!
Leader: Wash away all our evil and cleanse us from our sins!
People: We recognize our faults; we are always conscious of our sins.
Collect
Eternal God, who has created us and hatest nothing that you have made, and forgives the sins of those who are penitent: create in us new and contrite hearts that acknowledging our sins we may receive your forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Everlasting God, our Father, we bow before you in contrition acknowledging our many sins which we have committed in thought, word, and deed. We are indeed sorry for these our misdoings and it grieves us to remember them. Have mercy upon us, God of mercy, and grant that we may go forth to serve and please you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O Lord, our God, you have shown us what is required of us: to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with you. With these offerings we present unto you, Heavenly Father, ourselves and all that we have for ministry throughout the world. Amen.
Hymns
"Just As I Am, Without One Plea"
"Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior"
"Pues Si Vivimos" ("When We Are Living")
Ash Wednesday
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 5:20b--6:10
Theme: God's Servants
Call To Worship
Leader: Sincerity and truth are what God requires.
People: Fill our minds with your wisdom, Lord.
Leader: Remove our sin, and we will be clean.
People: Wash us, and we will be whiter than snow.
Leader: Let us hear the sounds of joy and gladness;
People: and, though you have crushed us and broken us, we will be happy once again.
Collect
Merciful God, our Father, tonight we begin a period of preparation for the celebration of our Lord's resurrection. Help us to feel and to acknowledge our share of the evil which made it necessary for him to suffer and die for our salvation. May we by self-denial, prayer, and meditation prepare our hearts for genuine penitence and a better life. We pray in the name of our Great Deliverer, even Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we are not worthy to come into your presence, for we have not loved you with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength; nor have we loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your great mercy you have forgiven our failures, and now we pray that you will create in us clean hearts and a new spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, in gratitude for all that you have done, we offer you ourselves, and all that we have. We pray that we may show ourselves to be your worthy servants by our true love, by our message of truth, and by your power working through us. Amen.
Hymns
"O Love, How Deep"
"Ye Servants Of God"
"Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind"
Ash Wednesday
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
Theme: Lessons In How To Give, Pray, And Fast
Call To Worship
Leader: Create in us pure hearts, O God,
People: and put a new and loyal spirit in us.
Leader: Do not banish us from your presence, Lord;
People: do not take your Holy Spirit away from us.
Leader: Give us again the joy that comes from your salvation;
People: and make us willing to obey you.
Collect
Almighty God, we come before you in the quiet of this sanctuary, and in the company of friends and loved ones who are part of our fellowship, to offer our prayers of contrition. We bow in your presence to receive the mark of these ashes as a sign of our mortality and repentance. We want this to be a time of close communion with you, and we are not interested in making a show for our neighbors and acquaintances. Let your Holy Spirit be upon us as we remember that it is through your Son, Jesus Christ, that we have the promise of eternal life. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, there have been times when we have been more concerned about what people think of our religious practices than we have been about whether or not they draw us closer to you. May the spiritual disciplines which we undertake in this holy season give us a deeper understanding of the significance of Christ's life, death, and resurrection that we may truly show forth his love for all humanity in all that we do and say. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Eternal God, we do not present these offerings as a display of our generosity, looking for the praise of people, but as our way of expressing our gratitude for all your blessings. May these gifts and our service be a blessing to others. In Jesus'Êname. Amen.
Hymns
"Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days"
"Sweet Hour Of Prayer"
"More Love To Thee, O Christ"
