Object: some wheat seeds and some weed seeds
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to look at something that troubles all of us. Have you ever wondered why there are mean people in the world and why God lets them live with the good people? That is a hard question. We read in the paper or watch on television about some of the worst things that happen to people, and we are always surprised that it was one person who did something mean to another person. Why does God let mean people live?
That is a question people have always asked. Let me share with you the answer that Jesus gave to his disciples. He told the story about a farmer who planted wheat in his field. It was good wheat and it should have grown up to be a fine crop. But one night after he had planted his wheat, an enemy came with some weed seeds and planted them with the wheat. (show the children both kinds of seeds; mix them together) The people came and told the farmer what had happened, but it was too late. What could the farmer do? If he dug up the seeds, there would be no wheat. If he tried to cut only the weeds after they started to grow, he could cut up the wheat also. There was only one thing to do. Let the wheat and the weeds grow together until the wheat was ready to cut, and then cut the weeds with it. Only after the wheat was cut would you separate out the bad weeds and throw them away.
That is the way God is working with us. God knows that there are a lot of bad people mixed in with the good people. There are a lot of people who want to share their love with one another and with God, and there are some who hate and are selfish. But if God sent a bad storm, he would kill the good with the bad. If he took away the sun and the rain, he would do the same. So God has decided to wait until the right time to do something about the bad. At the right time, when Jesus comes again, God will get rid of the bad and cause them to be sorry. Until then, you must know that the bad are going to live with the good, and the good are going to live with the bad. It is the way that God chose to do it. That's why Jesus told his story about the farmer and the seeds of wheat and weeds. The weeds stayed until the wheat was ready to be taken in, and then it was gotten rid of for good. The same will be true of people. When the time comes, God will take care of the people who love and share, and he will take good care of them. But he will also get rid of the bad so that they will not hurt the good anymore.
