The Sermon:
*Here is a valentine. Valentines seem to have hearts on them. What does a heart shape stand for? Yes, love. Valentines have messages of love and friendship.
The Bible is something like a valentine because it has a message of God's love and friendship. This verse from Psalm 103:11 says, "For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his [God's] steadfast love toward those who fear him...."
So, how high is the sky? Does it go on and on? So does God's love for those who love him. Another place in the Bible in the book of Jeremiah, God says, "I have loved you with an everlasting love" (Jeremiah 31:3a).
That means that God's love is always there for us. Now in John 3:16 we read, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
God didn't only say he loves us, he showed his love for us when Jesus came to earth, lived, taught, and died for us. We might send valentines and messages of love and friendship, but it is another thing to really mean it, to do loving things. Here is one more thing about God's love in 1 John 3:1, "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God."
If we will love God, accept Jesus as our Lord, we become the very children of God. He wants us to love him and become part of his family.
Let's love him and show it by doing all he asks of us.
