Call To Worship (Psalm 149:1-4)
One: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
All: Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.
One: Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.
All: For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with victory.
Collect
Freedom from slavery, Lord, freedom from sin - your gifts are boundless. Lest we fail to remember we come this day to call to mind your central saving events! Open our hearts and minds to your words, both those spoken aloud and those spoken directly in our hearts. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of memory, you call our ancestors in the faith and they answered despite their fears. You call to us now, but it is not slavery we flee, but security. We are enslaved to our possessions, to our fears, to our prejudices. We are enslaved to our past and our present. Call us away from the idolatry of security and into the freedom which you offer to your people in all times. Amen.
Hymns
"Steal Away"
"When Israel Was In Egypt's Land"
"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence"
Proper 18/Ordinary Time 23
Sunday between September 4 and September 10 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 13:8-14
Theme: The Night Is Far Gone, The Day Is At Hand
Call To Worship (based on Romans 13:11-13)
You know what time it is. Now is the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day.
Collect
As your new creation dawns around us we give thanks and praise to your glory as it is revealed, both in the world and in the people who surround us. Thank you, Lord Jesus! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we know your commandments well, but you call us not only to remember them, but to fulfill them with love. Where our love has been lacking we confess this to our shame. We pray now that your Love, which called us into being, might be evident in our lives, not to our credit, but for the glory of your gospel. Amen.
Hymns
"Morning Is Broken"
"Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus"
"No Night There"
Proper 18/Ordinary Time 23
Sunday between September 4 and September 10 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 18:15-20
Theme: Where Two Or Three Are Gathered ...
Call To Worship (Psalm 119:33-40)
(Unison) Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I will observe it to the end.
Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.
Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
Turn my heart to your decrees, and not to selfish gain.
Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; give me life in your ways.
Confirm to your servant your promise, which is for those who fear you.
Turn away the disgrace that I dread, for your ordinances are good.
See, I have longed for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life.
Collect
Heavenly Father, you call us together in community. Your law provides guidance, and the words of your Son bring life and light. We gather as one people, with our faults and flaws, seeking to forgive and be forgiven. Teach us in worship today the way we should act in imitation of your love. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord Jesus, your forgiveness is boundless. Challenge us to ask for and accept forgiveness from each other, to forgive as we are forgiven, to come together in love when there are differences, to seek to be reconciled in you. Let all our actions honor you as we seek to walk in your footsteps. Amen.
Hymns
"Just As I Am, Without One Plea"
"Breathe On Me, Breath Of God"
"Only A Sinner"
