The greasy, sticky pots and pans were piled precariously on the sink. The potatoes and carrots, beans and peas were stacked on the floor beside the sink when Brother Lawrence came into the kitchen from morning prayers. He said, "Ah, Brother Sink, you look full this morning and very pleased." As he scrubbed the pots and pans, Brother Lawrence sang:
"Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise God all creatures here below.
Praise God above ye heavenly hosts.
Praise God and Christ and Holy Ghost! Amen."
His singing filled the small, sunny kitchen all the morning. When the pots shone with cleanliness and the pans were scrubbed and put away, Brother Lawrence spoke to the vegetables on the floor. "Now, Brother Potato, it is time for your bath. Sister Carrot, how happy you must be that God has dressed you in such a joyful color. Brother Bean and Brother pea, you may have the same color, but each of you is unique in your shape. Praise God we are not all alike!" Brother Lawrence again began singing as he washed the vegetables, knowing he was in the presence of God.
