Can Redemption Be Bought?
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle C
Call To Worship
What about money? Can money buy everything we need? Can money serve as a ransom for freedom? Is money only an exchange tool for ownership and possession? What does money buy for you?
Collect
Teach us, O God, the difference between use of money for gain and for destruction. Strengthen our wisdom so we might know the proper time to exercise our right to possess. Teach us to weigh the merit of each potential purchase. Through the eyes of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Buy it for yourself. What tempting words. Teach us, O God, to listen to who is saying these words. Teach us to inquire and ponder before jumping into a "Yes, indeed." Amen.
56C Hymns
"All My Hope [On God] Is [Firmly] Founded" Tune: MICHAEL
"[I Greet You, Sure Redeemer][I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art]" Tune: TOULON
"Lift Every Voice And Sing" Tune: LIFT EVERY VOICE
Proper 21
Sunday Between September 25 and October 1 inclusive
Second Lesson: 1 Timothy 6:6-19
Theme: Real Life: Rich Or Riches?
Call To Worship
The stock market, pension plans, the security of social security, odd jobs, supplemental income, physically and mentally making it to an ever-extending retirement date. Setting our hopes on the uncertainty of riches becomes increasingly chancy. So that we may take hold of the life that really is life, let us set our hopes on God who provides us with everything we need. Come, let us worship God.
Collect
Gracious God, whose forethought provides us with sustenance for life, to you we give thanks. For opportunities to make wise choices about our financial future, we give you thanks. For confidence that allows us to trust our abilities, we are grateful, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we become vulnerable to our fears, remind us, O God, of what it takes to make us content. Surprise us as we learn how few material objects we need. Bring us back to the immaterial riches we gain in service to others, with a kind and generous heart, with a living faith, and with a positive and affirming attitude. Amen.
56C Hymns
"Teach Me, [My God][O Lord], [Thy][Your] Holy Way" Tune: ROCKINGHAM OR "Teach Us, Good Lord, To Serve" Tune: OLD 120TH
"Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us With Your Love" Tune: CHEREPONI
"Fight The Good Fight" Tune: GRACE CHURCH
Proper 21
Sunday Between September 25 and October 1 inclusive
Gospel: Luke 16:19-31
Theme: The Great Chasm
Call To Worship
Leader: Chasms pervade our lives:
People: Chasms of communication,
Leader: Chasms between good and evil,
People: Chasms of social or economic difference,
Leader: Chasms between wise and imprudent choice.
All: Can any two persons ever hear each other across a great chasm that divides them?
Collect
Show us the bridges, O God, which can unite countries and families and neighbors. Grant to us the ears to listen to the wisdom that will lessen schisms of religion, race, and attitude. Draw us toward right and just choices as we live from day to day. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You know, O God, what we do that separates us from you. You are cognizant of what we do that divides us from our neighbors. You are aware of our self-alienation. Forgive us. Help us to heed which abysses in our lives we can span and which only must be prevented. Amen.
56C Hymns
"When The Winds Rage All Around Us" Tune: WE TRUST IN YOU
"God, How Can We Forgive" Tune: LEONI
"When Painful Mem'ries Haunt Each Day" Tune: MOSHIER, KINGS-FOLD, or CONSOLATION
