THE WONDER OF WORDS: BOOK 2
ONE-HUNDRED MORE WORDS AND PHRASES SHAPING HOW CHRISTIANS THINK AND LIVE
The scientific study of human anatomy is a very recent development. Ancient doctors refused to cut into a corpse because they feared the ghost of the deceased. This fear promoted a "respect for the dead," which was expressed in English law by a statute prohibiting surgeons from practicing dissection. At the same time, however, advances in the field of medicine created a great demand for anatomical subjects. Professional grave robbers dug up bodies and sold them to physicians at high prices. Many a doctor, in earlier generations, dissected only one body in his lifetime.
