The highest compliment that can be said about an athlete is that he or she can be counted on to come through in the clutch. A baseball player who comes through in the clutch is, for example, the batter who fouls off several bad pitches and then delivers a key base hit to drive in the winning run when there are two outs in the ninth inning.
