COMMENTARY ON THE LESSONS
Lesson 1: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16
Moses is quoted as reminding the Israelites that as their lives become more prosperous they are to remember their times of trial and struggle. As Moses sees things, God purposely subjected the people to hardship in order to test them, to see if they would be loyal to God when things were bad. However, God always saw to it that their fortunes improved at the last minute. Now that times are improving, they must recall those days, recall that God is in control, and that they are still to remain loyal.
