Vladimir, First Christian Ruler of Russia, 1015
Olga, Confessor, 969
Vladimir of Kiev is known as the Apostle to the Russians. It was under his rule that Christianity became the major religion in what was eventually known as Russia: thus Vladimir is to Russia what Saint Patrick is to Ireland and Saint Olaf is to Norway. 1988 marked the one thousandth anniversary of Vladimir's conversion, which is also celebrated as the formal birthday of the Russian Orthodox Church.
