It was a classic scene right out of the heart of Protestant evangelicalism. Reminiscent of the revivalism of the nineteenth century, and bordering on the Pentecostalism of the twentieth century, the scene evokes both repugnance and nostalgia -- repugnance for a mode of religion, which seems hypocritical and out of fashion; but nostalgia for a religion which genuinely affects the spirit and provokes a change of heart.
