Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Prayer Of The Day
P: Gracious Father, you sent your Son so that we might have life and have it abundantly. May we seek such goodness in our lives and desire it for others, so that gathered as one flock, all people would find their rest in our great shepherd, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C: Amen.
Intercessory Prayers
Begin each new petition with:
Shepherd of our hearts ...
Shepherd of our communities ...
Shepherd of our nations ...
Shepherd of our churches ...
Shepherd of the strays ...
Offertory Prayer/Confession And Absolution
P: We hold back your goodness from one another.
We hold back, pretending it is our own.
C: Break open the tombs of pride and fear that we build,
so that in giving what is yours,
we might find what we truly need.
Silence for reflection and self-examination
P: The Lord is your shepherd: You shall never be in want.
Such goodness and mercy will seek you,
and they will find you;
so that in the banquet of love, you will forever be filled.
Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Post-Communion Prayer
A: We thank you, gracious God, that you have called us and sheltered us. Open now the gates of our hearts that we may embrace all those whom you have called your own, that together we may be eternally fed by your hand, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
Benediction
P: May the good shepherd carry you on this day,
until that great day comes when he will carry you
on a triumphant final journey home.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, +
and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

Service Notes
Have the children of the congregation create the sounds of the flock ("baa, baa, baa") preceding the gospel reading. (The adults can join in, too.) Lead them to a great crescendo, and then back down again in preparation to hear the voice of their shepherd.
There are two options for the Offertory Prayer:
1. Used as written immediately preceding the Eucharist.
2. Used at the opening of the service as a word of Confession and Absolution.
