Easter 7
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
The Easter story is about the triumph of creativity.
We are all entombed with large boulders blocking our escape
And liberation to the extent our creativity is blocked or stifled.
-- Matthew Fox, Creativity
Call To Worship
Leader: Be glad! Today has come. God is here! The whole planet is alive with the elements that sustain our lives.
People: We breathe air; we are kept warm with fire; we are cooled with cloudy skies; we drink spring waters. All creatures need these elements of nature to continue living.
Leader: The universe has many systems created by God and called "good." God calls us to care for nature and to resist evil and injustice.
People: Our relationships and our care for the earth, too, must show our appreciation for this planet and its systems. We are glad for all God has made.
Leader: Our gratitude shows up in our choices and in our use of time!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Unison)
Creating God -- thank you for giving us minds to think and hands to work and feet to play! Thank you for this planet home and the beauty you have created to show up at different seasons. We are glad for Sundays, glad for this place, and these companions. Our minds are wide open, expecting you to challenge us, to affirm us, and to give us peace. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Our words and our behaviors declare the beliefs that motivate us. What do you believe about God's claim on your life? How do you perceive the Holy empowering you? Here are a few minutes to consider the baggage that weighs you down and impedes your inner peace as well as your participation in society. Pray the printed prayer with me and then make your private prayers.
Community Confession (Unison)
Renewing God -- how grateful we are for the life and teachings of Jesus.
In him we see the way to be in the world and in you.
Free us from thoughts and behaviors that do not bring your kingdom to earth.
Give us audacity to change.
Expand our curiosity so we explore what is possible.
Reveal to us the shadows in our souls; help us to walk in your light. Amen.
Sermon Idea
The Acts story of Paul healing the "fortune teller" shows the consequences of our actions; there's usually a down-side as well as an up-side. In this case, the woman lost her means of making a living; Paul and Silas were jailed. In the global village, most of our national decisions have a down-side for someone, usually the powerless. Consider the many crafts organizations that teach third-world citizens to make items to sell elsewhere. Which ones actually put food on the table and a roof overhead? Which ones do not add to city garbage dumps? How does Paul's concern for "salvation" translate to a global economy and to global warming? It's fascinating that Paul is vocal about his citizenship and refuses to allow the violence perpetrated against him to go away silently!
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
Jesus of Nazareth had the courage to challenge the institutions of his day.
He had the strength and wisdom to make heaven a viable option.
In spite of suffering and death, he was faithful to his vision;
His teachings have influenced all the world.
He imaged God as divine parent, as divine and benevolent ruler, and as creator of all the world.
We believe that God is still creating and welcomes us to participate to make heaven available on earth
Through life and death, God is with us.
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Jesus came and went about blessing and healing. We can share our talents and our moneys to spread goodness. Share as you can.
Doxology
Angels We Have Heard On High (refrain)
Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Energy of the Universe -- we are grateful for food, money, and time to share. Work through us to establish a reputation for generosity and kindness. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
God of Jailers and Fortune Tellers -- we are aware that sometimes we play these roles. Help us to be wise enough to know when and where each might be appropriate. Inspire us with words, paintings, music, and movement. Live through us so your kingdom is a reality in some way.
God of Jesus and Mary -- thank you for the stories that remind us how to be in relationship with you and one another. Guide us to live the teachings of Jesus so we are at peace with ourselves and with our neighbors. Like men and women before us, we pray for peace in our neighborhoods and among nations. We pray for a powerful rush of Easter Life and Pentecostal Spirit so peace can come to every tribe.
God of Chaos and Order -- we pray for the church, the organization that tries to be helpful to us who seek to be at one with you. We pray for the church, the institution that tries to practice the compassion of Christ and the inclusiveness of Jesus. Help us not to put old duties and responsibilities before our twenty-first-century loyalty to you.
God of Body and Soul -- we pray for ourselves. We need courage to endure being consciously human. Our bodies ache, our minds slow down, society is not kind, violence is everywhere, and our souls long for your satisfying Spirit. Soothe our bodies. Shape our attitudes and our hopes so that our children and grandchildren honor you in caring for the earth and all its creatures. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is not a dead end;
It is a surprising journey to God.
Say "Yes" to life;
Laugh each day and unwind the threads of the world.
Notice new life around each corner.
Make new dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Christ lives!
