Epiphany 5
Poems
A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
When Jesus came to Peter’s house,
his moth’r-in-law was sick.
Jesus waited not for others.
He was confident and quick.
He took her by the hand and,
as she rose up from the bed,
she found her illness leaving
and her fever, too, had fled.
Thus restored, she came to serve him
and was diligent indeed,
out of gratitude to help him
and to meet his every need.
When Jesus comes to my house
and he cures my life of sin,
will I be quick to serve him?
Or will I, to my chagrin,
Find I quickly have forgotten
how, in love, he set me free,
as again I get distracted
by the world surrounding me?
Lord, as you have cured my fever,
help me now to sing your praise.
Grant that, filled with loving kindness,
I may serve you all my days.
