Object:
Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
As we speak about eternal life, we can affirm with the psalmist that the, "boundary lines have fallen for [us] in pleasant places; surely [we] have a delightful inheritance." The boundary lines have fallen in good places for Christians because the Lord, "is at our right hand." In other words, God provides us with strength, and because the Lord, "will not abandon us to the grave," "therefore we will be filled with eternal pleasures," isn't this a great line? There is great hope and much joy to preach from this psalm. For someone who knew the Lord, this passage will help those left behind to celebrate their beloved's present circumstances.
This passage can be used at virtually any funeral to help people focus on our joy in the Lord.
