Call to Worship (based on Psalm 112)
Leader: Praise Yahweh! Happy are those who fear God, who greatly delight in God's commandments.
People: Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Leader: They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.
People: Those who deal generously and conduct their affairs with justice will be blessed.
Leader: For the righteous will never be moved.
All: They will be remembered forever.
Call to Confession
Day after day we seek God; we call out, but do not listen. Let us confess to God our hesitance to listen to God's words. Let us pray together, first silently, then individually, and then together.
Prayer of Confession
Great and merciful God, the prophet Isaiah tells us that you desire our company; that you want to work with us in loosening the bonds of oppression. But we are too busy with our own lives to see the torment of others. We know that you want us to feed the hungry, help the homeless, and clothe the naked. We know that you want us to pay attention to the plight of those people in countries that know no freedom. We hear your call, but we do not heed it. Forgive us, God. Instill in us the desire to do your work in this world. We love you - help us to show that love to those who need it most. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
Isaiah tells us that if we call upon God, God will answer; when we cry for help, God will say, "Here I am." God, when we cry out, you give us the gift of redemption by giving us the gift of Jesus Christ. Christ lived for us, died for us, and lives again. Hallelujah! We are forgiven.
Scripture Readings
Isaiah 58:1--9a: This passage lends itself well to a choral speaking choir. If you have enough participants, they can be placed around the outside of the congregation, surrounding them with sound. Ten to twelve voices would be the minimum for this passage.
All: Shout out; do not hold back!
Voice 1: Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins.
Voice 2: Yet day after day they seek me.
Voice 3: And delight to know my ways,
Voices 2 and 3: As if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God.
Voice 4: They ask of me righteous judgments;
Voices 1--4: They delight to draw near to God.
All: Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why do we humble ourselves, but you do not notice?
Voice 5: Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers.
Voice 6: Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist.
Voices 5 and 6: Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself?
Voices 1--6: Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes?
All: Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?
Voice 7: Is not this the fast that I choose; to loose the bonds of injustice,
Voice 8: To undo the thongs of the yoke,
Voice 9: To let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
Voice 10: Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
Voice 11: and bring the homeless poor into your house;
Voice 12: when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Voices 10--12: Then your light shall break forth like the dawn
Voices 7--9: And your healing shall spring up quickly.
Voices 4--6: Your vindicator shall go before you;
Voices 1--3: The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
All: Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, "Here I am."
Matthew 5:13--20: This passage is part of the Sermon on the Mount. It works best if you have a storyteller who can memorize the passage and then retell it as if he is in the midst of a crowd of people, teaching them. Move up and down the center aisle. Establish eye contact with parishioners.
Call to Offering
What God has prepared for those who love God will be revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. Let us prepare to share God's gifts with others by giving generously in this morning's offering.
Prayer of Dedication
Gracious and loving God, we bring our gifts today because we want to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We have been given great gifts through your loving kindness, and we want those around the world to know that love. Accept our offering and use it to further your work, so that we might better understand the gifts you have bestowed on us. Amen.
Benediction
"What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him...." Go today with open heart and open hands to accept all that God offers you. Use all your senses to understand the richness of God's gifts in the world. Use that understanding to help others. And may the peace which passes all understanding fill your hearts and minds with the love of God. Amen.
