Series VII, Cycle A
Call To Worship
One: God spoke to Moses from the burning bush.
All: With Moses we answer, "Here I am!"
One: God warns us we are standing on holy ground.
All: This is the place we have set aside to worship the God of history.
One: This is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
All: This is the God who has seen our suffering.
One: This is our God, our God forever, for all generations.
Collect
Lord, you call to us from the burning pages of our Bible. With all the world's distractions we fear we might walk by. Calm our hearts and beckon to us as we enter this holy ground to worship you fully and praise your mighty name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, you have heard our many excuses when your call comes to us as individuals and as your church. How blest we are that you speak to us through your Word, through the prophets who walk in our midst today, and in the still small voice that burns in our hearts. We commit ourselves to grow as your witnessing people this day. Amen.
Hymns
"My Life Flows On"
"In Thy Holy Place We Bow"
"Here I Am, Lord"
Proper 17/Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 12:9-21
Theme: Live Peaceably With All
Call To Worship
God calls us to seek the welfare of all the people. In our worship and in our living let us strive, with God's help, to live peaceably with all. Gather today with this intent!
Collect
Lord, we come to your sanctuary determined to live in harmony with each other and with the world, not because this is easy, but because this is your will. We no longer wish to repay evil with evil, but will overcome evil with good. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession (built around Romans 12:9-21)
One: Let our love be genuine, Lord. We hate what is evil and hold fast to what is good.
All: With your help we will rejoice in hope, remain patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.
One: Let us all contribute to the needs of the saints and extend hospitality to strangers.
All: Grant us the strength to bless those who persecute us, the grace to rejoice with those who rejoice, the courage to weep with those who weep.
One: Let us live in harmony with all God's people, associating with all, regardless of the world's opinion.
All: As far as it is possible, Lord, we seek to live peaceably with all. Amen.
Hymns
"Take Time To Be Holy"
"Jesus Loves Me, This I Know"
"There Is A Place Of Quiet Rest"
Proper 17/Ordinary Time 22

Gospel Lesson: Matthew 16:21-28

Call To Worship (based on Psalm 105:1-7)
One: O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.
All: Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works.
One: Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
All: Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.
One: Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
All: He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
Collect
We praise you, Lord Jesus, for your loving example and endless patience, for your steadfast love and ever-flowing grace. We praise you for the cross, the tomb, and the resurrection. In our worship today we proclaim the whole gospel in our midst for ourselves and the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of memory, our hearts are heavy with the weight of our sins. We contemplate your question, what will it profit us to gain the whole world at the price of our souls? We pledge today that with your help we will deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow you. As we wait for the Son of Man to return in glory, we confess that without your gift of grace we are lost. Thank you Lord for your boundless love. These things we pray in your mighty name. Amen.
Hymns
"Are Ye Able?"
"When I Survey The Wondrous Cross"
"Lift High The Cross"
