Verse: For thou, O God, hast proved [tested] us: thou hast tried [refined] us, as silver is tried.
A child of age seven can be deeply hurt by fellow playmates. I ran home crying on the day that my two friends plotted against me and said hard things. The real tragic event occurred when the two friends revealed that one of their families was going to take them to a basketball game, but I was not included. I thought that my heart would break. I ran home. My mother stopped what she was doing and shared the deep hurt that I was feeling.
My saintly mother comforted me and said, "God is testing you." God does indeed test us as the Psalmist wrote.
Just as one would refine metal to get out the impurities, times of distress offer a testing of God's people as to their trust and loyalty. Trials can refine one's character.
James, who is considered by many to be the half-brother of Jesus and a leader in the Jerusalem church, has some very inspirational things to say in his writing. For instance: "Knowing this, that the trying [testing] of your faith worketh patience [perseverance]" (James 1:3).
