In the late 1940s, Reverend Peter Marshall, the well-known pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C., was voted into the office of Chaplaincy of the United States Senate.
But the office required that the daily prayers, used while the Senate was in session, be prepared several or more days in advance of their use. This was requested by the office of the Reporters of Senate Debate, and the Congressional Record.
