Godly vocations for the unworthy
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Godly vocations for the unworthy
Gospel Note:
Luke's account of Jesus' calling of Peter apparently is based on Mark and Luke's own material, but placed comparatively late in Jesus' ministry. The call itself is accompanied by a self-depreciation typical of other biblical characters summoned to godly vocations, but is unusual in the sense that the declaration of personal unworthiness precedes the call, as a reaction to the power exhibited by Jesus in the miraculous catch of fishes.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Hail To The Lord's Anointed
Your Word, O Lord, Is Gentle Dew
May We Your Precepts, Lord, Fulfill
O Christ, The Healer, We Have Come
34
Epiphany 5
Lord God,
it is exciting to hear how you overcame the
resistance of the disciples.
They said that they had fished all night.
They had caught nothing.
They were prepared to give up, but at the word
of Jesus, they let down the nets one more time.
They experienced a catch beyond belief! They
were astonished and afraid. Jesus reassured them.
From that point on, they would be catching people.
They were ready to be sent!
It is exciting to think that you have called us
to serve you.
We are ready to be sent!
Amen.
