In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning -- the first day.
Now what are you going to say about death based on the creation story? How about, "Wow! If God can do this what is the problem with resurrection? Why would we feel God can't give us new and imperishable bodies?" This passage is a powerhouse for preaching. "In the beginning God...." Let's just stop there. God was the "beginner" the starter. If God could start it, why not restart it? If God could make it, why not remake it? Here is a perfect opportunity to reflect a bit on the awesome power of God and proclaim the implications of that power for humanity. There is great comfort in knowing that God is all-mighty. Couple this with some scriptural words on God's love and you have an unbeatable combination.
