Call to Worship
Leader:
It is a high calling to be chosen by God to speak on his behalf.
Response: God has empowered us with his Spirit to speak with honest conviction his will concerning the Christian life.
Leader:
The responsibility to speak is not with words only, but by example, that others may be inspired to live righteous lives.
Response: May the words we speak be illustrated by the life we live!
Collect
Almighty God, who has called your pastors to speak the truth, and to live by the truth they speak: Consecrate us in our service, that we may give honor to you in all we do. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We are sinful people, Father, and the more we sin the more we convince ourselves we are alright. We misinterpret your love thinking we may do as we please without having to face judgment. Forgive us for our indifference to the justice of your love. Help us not only to accept your love, but also the responsible life that is inspired by your love. We pray in our Savior's name. Amen.
Hymns
"Go, Make of All Disciples"
"I Would Be True"
"Let Zion's Watchmen All Awake"
"O Young and Fearless Prophet"
PROPER 28

Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Theme:
Be ready for Christ's return
Call to Worship
Pastor:
The Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, without warning.
People:
We who are God's children should be ready at all times, without fear.
Pastor:
Instead of fear, we should be full of joy, because of our salvation in Jesus!
People:
Praise God for our salvation in Christ Jesus!
Collect
Heavenly Father, who desires that we should each receive salvation through your Son: Keep us strong in our faith, and alert in our discipleship; that we may live as your children without fear of destruction, encouraged by your love. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We have faith in your Son Jesus, Father; but we need more faith to be ready for his return. Forgive us for our immaturity in living as your children, unsure of the salvation which Christ has given us. Awaken us to the joy which is ours; that we may know we are your children, saved by your Son who died for us. In his name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"O Day of God, Draw Nigh"
"O Happy Day"
"The King Shall Come"
"The Lord Will Come and Not Be Slow"
PROPER 28
Sunday between November 13 and 19 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 25:14-3O
Theme:
Parable of the three stewards
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God has entrusted us with the gift of life: life which is responsible to Christ our Lord.
People:
Every day we live is a day which cannot be relived. We must do our best while it is ours.
Pastor:
The gift is from God. But he expects us to invest ourselves in it, that life may become more rewarding.
People:
May God help us be faithful with our stewardship, as we invest our lives in the joy of his love.
Collect
Gracious Father, whose gift of life includes abilities which demand responsibility: Keep us faithful in commiting our whole being to living the Christian life, that discipleship may lead us into an ever growing and maturing experience of salvation through Christ. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Father, we want to be Christian; but to be committed is a challenge we are hardly prepared for. We have preserved our certificates of baptism and membership, but they represent little investment of our self in living Christian lives. Forgive us for being unfaithful with our stewardship as Christian disciples. Lead us by your Spirit to give our best in living as followers of Christ our Lord, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"A Charge to Keep I Have"
"Awake, Awake to Love and Work"
"Have Thine Own Way, Lord"
"Take My Life, and Let It Be Consecrated"
