The growing reality of the Kingdom of God
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
Mark probably connected these two originally independent "seed
parables" because of the similarity of subject and metaphor. Each
speaks to the nature of the Kingdom, but with a particular
nuance: the secretly growing seed suggests that the Kingdom's
growth on earth is beyond human comprehension or control; while
the mustard seed emphasizes the contrast between the first,
tentative beginnings of the Kingdom and the final, "sheltering"
reality it promises to become.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Almighty God, Your Word Is Cast
We Know That Christ Is Raised
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Lord, Take My Hand And Lead Me
Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me
Eternal Father, Strong To Save
Proper 6 ù Pentecost 4 ù OT 11
Surprises are unsettling, Lord!
We cannot control them!
Sometimes they delight us and sometimes
they frighten us.
Preside over our surprises, Lord.
When people dredge up reasons to resist the
good news,
surprise us with words of grace and
power which will quench the thirst
of the soul.
When ministries are launched and problems
surface,
surprise us with creative solutions.
When people are hurting and angry,
surprise us with the compassion and presence
of mind to create a climate of healing.
Yes, preside over our surprises, Lord, and lead us
toward the never-ending joy of your kingdom.
Amen.
