The Holy Trinity
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle A
Object:
Words Of Assurance
In this take comfort: that the Trinity can best be understood as God in action -- planning, working out, and applying divine forgiveness.
Pastoral Prayer
Almighty God, source of all life and love, we give you thanks and praise that we are not alone, that we live in the world you have made, and that you are always creating and sustaining the world by the power of your Word. We give you thanks that you have so made us that we can know you and love you, trust you and serve you. We give you thanks that you love the world so much that you gave your only Son so that everyone who has faith in him will not die but have eternal life.
Lord, catch us off guard today. Surprise us with some moment or memory of beauty or pain so that for at least a few seconds we may be startled into seeing that you are with us here and now, shining in silent splendor. Let us know that you are everywhere and always, that you are barely hidden beneath, beyond, and within the very life we live each day.
Today, O God, we pray that you will bring healing to our fragmented selves so that we may be whole, functioning sons and daughters of yours. You know the many conflicting ways we feel and act, how we are so often losers instead of winners, afraid to venture, busy going nowhere. We discount ourselves as persons of value and worth. We discount our own potentialities for leadership, to think bold new thoughts, to create new exciting ways of doing your work. We are divided in our loyalties. We say that you are our beloved God and Father, and yet we find ourselves worshiping at the shrines of wealth, power, and prestige. We intuitively know that we are spiritual persons. Yet we find ourselves overwhelmed with the urgencies of passion, diverted from spirit to flesh, from long-range commitments to short-term pleasures. O God, we need you to be the organizing, centering power to bring harmony, wholeness, and perspective to our beings. Be the coordinating chairman to call our many selves to order. Unite the two so long divided: heart and mind, body and spirit, calling and deed. Let us love you with total abandonment, knowing that we shall never be abandoned by you.
All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Benediction
May the inspiration of God the Father, the encouragement of God the Son, and the enlightenment of God the Holy Spirit be yours now and forever. Amen.
