Familiar Expressions from the Bible
Object:
Expression: How long, oh, how long!
Location: Exodus 10:3
Verse: Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Is this expression used all over the country? Or is it just a Tennessee expression? Let me explain.
It was the summer of 1948 -- July, to be exact. Television sets were still an oddity in the home. Those who owned a set always invited others in to watch.
The summer of 1948 was not only exciting because we could watch this new invention which brought real, live, pictorial events into our home, but this particular summer also brought the very educational exposure of the two national political party conventions into our living room via the television screen.
We Tennesseans had great interest in watching the Democratic convention from Philadelphia. The keynote speaker for the convention was Frank Clement -- Governor Frank Clement of Tennessee.
Politician Frank Clement was admired regardless of one's political preference. He was a family man and a church man. He taught a Sunday school class at a local Methodist church in Nashville.
On this summer night in 1948, everyone was watching the keynote speaker with great interest. Once in a while the television camera would focus on President Harry Truman. Mr. Truman could be seen smiling at his wife Bess in a very pleasant way as he was approving of the words coming from the charismatic and dynamic keynote speaker.
An expression that many people and newspapers picked up on and remembered from the speech by Governor Clement was the phrase, "How long, oh, how long," as Governor Clement drew out the word "oh" in his southern drawl.
This expression is from the Bible. Of course, Governor Clement knew it was from the Bible and used it very effectively as he promoted his party's views and platform.
In the Old Testament, Moses and Aaron came into the presence of Pharaoh and said in effect, "How long, oh, how long?"
