Perhaps no artist in history has expressed the tenderness and beauty, as well as the majesty and glory of the Biblical tradition, as has Italy's Michelangelo. Determined to become an artist against his father's wishes, he was apprenticed to Florentine artists at a young age. Legend has it that he got his beginning as a sculptor from a cast-off piece of marble ruined by other students. Under Michelangelo's hammer and chisel, the cast-off became a masterpiece.
