Object: a stapler and some pieces of paper
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever thought that Jesus is like a stapler? You know what a stapler is, don't you? It looks like this. (hold up the stapler) Now, how do you think that Jesus could be compared to a stapler? (let them answer)
Those are some pretty good ideas, but I would like to try a different one on you. Let's suppose that one of these pieces of paper is God and the other piece of paper is all of the people in the world. I am going to mark one piece of paper "God," and the other piece I am going to mark "people." God is holy and perfect. People are sinners and not holy. God wants people to be with him. God loves us, but there is such a difference in his world and our world that there doesn't seem to be any way that we can get together. I could try to put the God paper and the people paper together, but I don't think they will stay. (hold the two pieces of paper together and then let them fall) They just will not work together.
Then of course we have the stapler which we are going to call "Jesus." You know, of course, what will happen when I use the stapler on the two pieces of paper. That's right; they become tied together and they will stay together forever. That is exactly what Jesus did for God and for people. Jesus came from God and he was perfect and holy. Here on earth he lived as a human and took all of the people's sin and was killed. Now God is holy and people can be without their sin because of what Jesus did. God and people can live together. That is why I think that we can talk of Jesus being like a stapler. It is Jesus who brought us together.
Maybe the next time that you see a stapler you will think a little bit about how I explained to you that a stapler is something like Jesus, and that we are a little bit like pieces of paper. It would be wonderful if you could remember the plan of God and how he sent Jesus to bring us together. That is the reason he came and died for us. Will you try hard to remember? Wonderful.
