Jumping With Help
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: string or rope
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to have a lot of fun and I hope that we are also going to learn something. I brought along a piece of rope and I want to use it to make a line on the floor. This rope is the starting line for a contest. I want to see how far you can jump, starting at this line. (line the children up so that they can take turns jumping) The winner of our contest will be the person who can jump the farthest. (select the winner)
You can really jump far. We are going to let you brag a little about yourself. Would you like to tell everyone what you do to jump farther than anyone else in the room? (prompt her or him with a few questions and draw out her bragging so that she thinks you are serious)
The thing that is so important about this is that our winner did it all by herself. She jumped from here to there without any help. That means a lot, and she is allowed to brag. Now I want to show her something I hope will help her learn something else. She jumped from the line to this place without any help, but let's see how far she can jump with a little bit of help. (let her line up at a place on the rope and get ready to jump again, only this time count to three and then lift her as she jumps so that she far exceeds her first jump) What a jump that was! It is a lot farther than she jumped by herself.
That was fun, but it should teach us something. All of us like to brag to one another. But have you ever had someone brag to God? (let them answer) Did you ever tell God how good you were when you know that God is a lot better? Have you ever told God how good you made something when you know all of the good things that God has made? I don't think so. You can't brag in front of God.
The other thing is this and I want you to remember it. If you can do something by yourself, then think how good you could do it with God's help. God is always ready to help, and God does a super job of helping people when they let him. You know how much farther you can jump if you have a little help. The same thing is true when you pray to God and ask him to help you with whatever you are doing. God can make you go farther and do better, and he can help us do our things far better than we can do them ourselves.
