Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Order For Confession
P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, +
and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: The tempter comes with a seductive sweetness in his voice.
The tempter comes promising us the world.
The tempter comes, and without you, dear Jesus,
we are defenseless.
How has the tempter come to you in these days?
Let us remember now, that his deadly spell might be
broken and life restored.
Silence for reflection and confession
P: By the power of the one who alone conquers evil,
your sins are forgiven.
C: Amen.
Prayer Of The Day
P: Cities of steel and fields of gold, the world's allure glitters in the morning sun. But you alone, O Lord, shine brighter than them all. Hold us close, that we might love you as you love us, fully, completely, and eternally. In the name of Christ.
C: Amen.
Offertory Prayer/Confession Of Faith
P: To live out your word, O Yahweh, is our desire.
A: In lifting up these gifts we say to the world:
C: There is one God, creator, redeemer, and sustainer of all things.
A: In lifting up these gifts we say to the world:
C: You make all life holy.
P: As we release what we have clung to so desperately,
we pray that you would hold on to us,
so that we might live out your love,
C: Freely and without fear. Amen.
Eucharistic Prayer
P: Bread alone will not sustain us,
nor all the money in the world.
But your Word made flesh in our lives
will transform our rebellion into obedience
and our fear into strength.
C: Come and fill our hearts, O blessed Jesus.
P: From the highest mountaintops
you see the monuments that we build
to glorify ourselves.
And so that we may not be fooled by their grandeur
you call us to your humble table,
where in a crumb and a sip
we receive more than the world alone could ever give.
C: Come and fill our hearts, O Holy Spirit.
P: In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks,
broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying:
"Take and eat. This is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me."
Again after supper he took a cup,
gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying:
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people
for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me."
Send forth your Spirit upon these, your gifts
of bread and wine, and upon these, your people.
Sustain them in your love,
as you make all things new.
C: Through Christ, with Christ,
in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father,
now and forever. Amen.
Benediction
P: May your lives give glory to your Father in heaven.
May your hearts be sustained by Christ Jesus, the one in whom all evil is defeated. +
And may your spirits be filled by the breath of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Dismissal/Acclamation
L: Worship the Lord, your God.
C: Serve him alone. Amen.

Service Notes
If you follow the pattern of a confession that begins Ash Wednesday with its subsequent absolution received on Maundy Thursday, then you may simply want to begin each service with a penitential psalm rather than a more formal order for confession. If you choose that pattern, let there be a time of silence following the prelude, followed by the striking of a singing bowl to draw the worshipers deeper into the silence, followed by the communal praying (spoken or chanted) of the psalm. If you choose to use an order for confession, note that these Lenten confessional orders end with an assurance of pardon rather than a declarative absolution.
For the reading of the gospel, use three or four voices to portray the tempter, so that the sound of temptation is manifested in the everyday sounds of our lives.
