This Little Light Of Mine

Object:
lamp
(Bring a lamp that uses oil, such as in Jesus' time, and a basket.)
Jesus preached to the people. Once, sitting on a hillside, he said, "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp (Light the lamp) puts it under the bushel basket (Put it under the basket) but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so they may see your good works, and give glory to your Father in heaven."
Talk together: What do you think Jesus might have meant when he said, "You are the light of the world?" (Pause) Can we be plugged into electricity and shine? Jesus' words were for the people of the church who could see with their imagination. We call them "metaphors."
We sing a song about "this little light of mine," meaning the light our love casts.
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Everywhere I go ...
All through the night ...
(Substitute "anyone" for "Satan" in "Don't let Satan blow it out ... No ....")
Prayer: Dear Lord, let our lights shine, our words sing, and our prayers give you glory. Amen.
