According to the Greek historians, Archimedes had a tough mathematical problem. A king had asked him to determine if a crown he had been given was pure gold or if it contained other base metals. Of course, if Archimedes had melted it down he would have known the exact percentage of gold and alloy, but that would have destroyed the crown.
