When the Great Fire of London destroyed the original St. Paul's Cathedral in 1666, Sir Christopher Wren, the architect, was commissioned, in 1675, to design and build the new Cathedral. That work took thirty-five long years to complete. When it was finished, in 1710, Queen Anne was invited to see the structure. After she finished looking around, she turned to Sir Christopher and said: "It is awful, it is amusing, and it is artificial." Surprisingly, Wren breathed a sigh of relief.
